I finished the VOR 48hrs ago and after following a roughly similar course on SOL, I'm anything from 12 to 24 hrs away from finishing ... hmm ... why?

The published polars for each game look the same except that the VOR speed displayed is up to 5% less than what is actually achieved ie the published VOR polar isn't what the VOR server is using.

Anyway, I have to say that the VOR is the more difficult race because you do have to select the most appropriate sail. Also the SOL screen is small and cluttered with extraneous information eg the other 1000 boats. The SOL weather info at 10/20min intervals is just too much info and the latest wheeze of darkening the screen doesn't help.

Then there's the VOR software and server problems .. once you know what to do, its tolerable but what a mess ...

On SOL have you used F11 key for full screen size, or on View tab select full screen?
I must admit I hate the night time screen, I tend to use the old client during darkness.

Jings .. no I haven't. There's no mention of this in the manual. There is mention made of a "view" tab but I can not get it. In the manual, this tab allows you to get rid of other boats - or so it seems.

VOR use gfs NOAA wind gribs at 1 degree resolution and that appears to be SOL's source except SOL allows the resolution to increase as you zoom in and that is a further cluttering of the screen ...

The view tab is the view tab on internet explorer or whichever web browser you are using. You can hide other boats on the old downloadable client that's probably what the manual is talking about.
