I have a Project 31 fitted with Volvo 2.1 Diesel's. Following the sevice guide i have changed the pump impellors, one will not pump although the old split worn out one works like a "gud un"! I have changed the worn pump cover plate to no avail, getting desperate any idea's?

Maybe a silly question but the seacock is open? If it is have you looked at the strainer to see if you have a blockage. If you have no blockage, try removing the hose from the inlet side and filling the pump with water to prime it. Re attach hose and try again. Incidentally, make sure the hose clamps are tight so that no air is drawn.

Try smearing the new impellor with Vaseline to help it seal until it beds in.

Good luck!

Thanks Nick, have tried priming/vasaline/hose tightness but no go, as soon as i put in the old impellor the pump works perfectly.

Lionel, This is a bit of an enigma but for what its worth here is my thoughts, Make sure when you fit the impeller that the blades are bent the right way, it helps to put a tie wrap round them, tighten it to curve the blades, insert the impeller half way in then cut the tie wrap. Use plenty of waterproof grease initially, it helps with the seal and lubricates the impeller until water takes over. Maybe silly but have you got the correct impeller?. Also try priming the pump. If all else fails try going to www.boatdiesel.com, go to the Volvo forum and post the question there. Karl will probably have the answere. Good luck. BTW I have had the same boat/engine configuration and can help with contacts for parts etc. I also have a few spares from when I converted my cooling system etc if you have a need for any. Regards,

Eddie

Lionel Assuming you are refering to the raw water cooling pump......you are on the right track by replacing the covers......however you will probably find that the inside back surface is also worn..this is reversable...it can be prized off with a screw driver, its easier to undo the two bolts holding the pump on and taking it right off....the shaft will come out too, thats ok, its easy to get back in. When you reverse the back put a little grease behind it, this will take up any slack and help the new impellor do its job. Make sure you change the impellors every year and this won't happen again.

Good luck Paul B
