I am having problems with the starter motor on my Volvo 2002. The starter has failed several times due to ingress of oil into the brushgear end of the motor. The outer casing of the starter gets very oily. Dispite several close examinations of the engine I am unable to locate the source of this oil. It is not getting in via the flywheel housing which is completely oil free. Has anyone suffered similar problems or have any helpfull suggestions for future investigations?

Have you checked the exhaust , its the only thing that is above the starter it can weep oil out of the gasket. Most unusual.
