VOLVO TMD31

The 1993 Nimbus 27C I have just bought is fitted with the Volvo TMD31, which is rated at 100hp, whereas the TAMD31 which is normally fitted to this model is rated at 124hp.

Can anybody tell me what the letters TAMD mean? and what is the difference between the 2 engines apart from the missing 24hp?

Turbocharged
Aftercooled
Marine
diesel

A version
TMD31 does not have an after or intercooler
when you turbocharge an engine you compress the air going into the engine which allows more fuel to be burnt but also heats the air an after cooler cools it and allows even more fuel to be burnt

The good news is that I put around 4,000 hours in total on three different TMD31s in the 1990s and the engines only managed to get through one set of injectors (at about 1,400 hours on two of the three) with no other major issues. Not the cleanest engines, especially if run off load for long periods, but reliable in my experience.

Thanks for your comments, good to know that the TMD31 looks like offering good reliability. The engine has only recorded circa 400 hrs, so is bearly run in!

I have already noticed though that at river speeds (i.e Norfolk Broads speeds) the unit is a little smokey. I'm hopefull that a full service and a long play at speed on Breydon should help somewhat? - but more than anything I'm extremly impressed with the fuel consumption, it does'nt seem to be using any diesel at all!

Being turbocharged TMD31 benefits from the occasional run at speeds where it is well and truly under load, which really means 3,000rpm or greater. We were on and off river navigations all the time so it didn't matter to us; an occasional Breydon Water foray at extravagent throttle settings ought to do it for you although no need to bend all the way open.

Re: TMD31. I ran 2 MD31 in my Pedro 34 for ten years with no problems .You will not get rid of the smoke or raw diesel! coming out of the exhausts below 1500rpm.Once above this the engines perform superbly. The problem is the fuel injector pump, you can get rid of the pollution at 1500rpm by resetting the pump but you will lose top end rpm. Best forget about it they never let me down. Dont forget to check the valve clearances at the rec. intervals.
