I have found some details that older Volvo Penta motors use a protocol called J1939 to transmit engine data, rpm, fuel burn etc.
I have also seen advertised a Maretron J2K100 which can convert J1939 to NMEA2000
And in another post I have seen mentioned that a VP3847825 harness is needed to connect some older Volvos to the Maretron.

My motor is a year 1996 diesel 370hp Volvo TAMD63P and I have Garmin 750s chart plotters, I would like to display information like mpg onto.

Want I need to know is, will the above combination work with my motor?
Is the VP3847825 harness the correct one for my motor and how difficult is it to fit?
Will it just plug in somewhare on the motor or will it require splicing into (soldering into) the existing loom?

Am I being realistic? or is my motor just too old?

Thank you for looking

Looking to do the same with my TAMD61As. This is the best solution I found.
Alba combi

Thank you for that, looks very similar to the Maretron
do you know how difficult it is to fit?
Do you need to also purchase a Volvo cable to connect it with
Can it just plug in to a diagnostic port or similar, (I'm assuming the Volvo motor has a diagnostic port?)
or does it require cutting into the original Volvo engine or dashboard wiring loom to make connections?

There are other solutions like the Noland RS11 but the Alba Combi is the best I've found.
The Noland RS11 only has 6 analogue inputs so you'd probably need one for each engine. The Alba Combi has 14 so one unit will do both engines plus some spare for things like tank levels or whatever.
I haven't bought one yet, in fact I'm still looking for a MFD, but my undertanding is that you just piggyback off the volvo guages then plug it into a laptop to calibrate.

If the aim is to get mpg I can't see how you will get it as the Volvo Penta 63P does not measure fuel used.

I have 2001 63P's and have looked at fuel flow rate monitoring and the only system I found that could monitor it is Floscan, it's quite expensive and in the end I did not fit it.

I went down the route of accurate fuel tank monitoring and rule of thumb estimates as well as calculating fuel remaining and theoretical range. I fitted Tank Tender by Hart systems sold by IMP in the UK.

With a petrol engine its simple you measure the flow of fuel to the engine, with a diesel you have the measure the flow to the engine and the return to the tank and deduct one from the other.

Thank you for all the replies, it's looking more complicated than I first imagined, maybe I will stick with my current instruments
