Last October I bought a 43ft Neptunus fitted with 2 Volvo TAMD61A with 1300 hrs on the clock. The boat was said to be uses mostly on channels in the Nettherlands at faily low speed.
In the beginning both engines reved up to 2500 rpm and not to the 2800 specified. The props were right as a calculation by some prop expert showed, the were somewhat corroded however and the are due for a replacement or repair next winter.
I was able to go for roughly 15 hrs of use at 2200 to 2500 rpm: Then one morning when firing the engines up again, the starbord engine did go well to 1500 rpm and then slowly went up to 1800 emiiting a tremendous amount of black smoke.
A change of the Racors and the fine filters was done, also the air inlet filters, the boat checked and it again reved up to 2500 rpm on both engines. Also I found some water, and some muck in the starbord tank. With the help of some biocide and some draining the ugly stuff, the fuel seemed pretty clear.
Now the enige developped a pattern of sometimes after starting up going well to 2500 rpm and after some idling or crusing slowly at channel speed, resisting to go beyond 1500 rpm and blowing out black smoke. When at 2400 to 2500 rpm the engine showed about 10C higher temperature that the port one (oh, yes, the impeller was also changed together with the filter job prior to this happening).
Meanwhile the engine shows the loss of power and black smoke always. Continous changes of the
We have not seen any loose hoses or anything blowing.
The plan is to start with checking and possible refurbishing the injectors next week.
Any further recommendation for a systematic search? What should we check next?
a) Carbonized exhaust? Can that have an effect on such a big engine?
b) Turbo? How should we check?
c) ???
Could it be that the starbord engine was never up to power and therefore even the port engine did not reaqch full revs?
Sorry for that long story
