Replaced the Volvo sterngland on my Hunter for this season.
It was 15 years old , the original , with no leaks at all , but I think twice the reccomended replacement interval is pushing it far enough.

I made up a greasing tool for the new seal by aralditing a straw onto a syringe.
It worked perfectly.
The 'insertion distance' to get your grease inbetween the first and second seal lips is 15mm (on a 25mm unit)

Then I cut up the old unit

Cut through the bellows.

Measuring the support bearing bore , about 25.3 with perhaps 750 hrs running.

Seal lips etc.
I noted that the support bearing is not a moulded in unit and consists of the parent rubber.
It's polished smooth by the shaft.
There was little wear on the seal lips but one crack in the lip , however this was not leaking at all.
The seal has always been carefully burped and greased.
