As I am replacing the shaft and cutlass bearing.I think I might as well go for a dripless shaft seal at the same time. The Volvo seams highly regarded on this forum.I have googled but can find no supplier are they the same as PSS seals?
Any recomendations and comments greatfully recieved.

We have one, great device. I would get one at a Volvo agent. Don't forget the grease.

It's nothing like a PSS seal. It's a chunk of durable rubber, and with minimal care will last around 10 years. See here for pic and details.

No not the same as PSS. A much more simple item which everybody speaks well of.

But - they are made to reasonably tight tolerances for shaft size and stern tube OD - My boat won't take one - see my thread on the subject here

I have ordered one of these dripless ones instead £129.50 incl VAT and delivery
Tides Marine shaft seal through their UK base 01202 656773

Used to have one on a previous boat, again an excellent piece of equipment. Gave no trouble at all. In addition to greasing don't forget to burp it when you relaunch. Also very important not to overgrease it.
Am planning to install one on our present yacht subject to shaft size etc. Much easier than having to cut packing rings and check on the tightness of the packing nut to make sure the packing hasn't been over-compressed.
Also bottom of the boat stays dry!

Ten years must surely be a minimum for most installations! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Mine lasted for 18 years and was still operating perfectly, never letting a single drop into the boat. It was only changed as part of a major refit when I replaced the Cutless bearing. It's now the spare though I don't expect to ever need it! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Highly recommended bit of kit!
