Has anyone got any tips of how to regrease a Volvo water lubricated shaft seal whilst the boat is ashore?

What method do you use to ensure the grease reaches the innermost seal, and how do you measure the required 1 cc of grease?

Many thanks, Allan

Get a plastic bank bag or similar, cut diagonally across one corner so that its about1/2 inch.squeeze about 1cubic cms into the bag about 1inch back from the corner,,press with thumb and first finger, the seal 180 deg apart so that seal leaves the shaft and enables you to push the corner of the bag, about 1inch into the seal.Press the bag so that it lays on the shaft, then squeeze the grease into the seal.slowly removing the bag while you do. There are about 3 lip seals and each of them requires some grease. You can make the grease go into the seal by wrapping the first finger and thumb round the shaft and pushing the grease in.

One of the thicker diameter drinking straws (such as those from McDonalds) works well, fill with grease (1cc is about the size of a sugar lump) flatten one end of the straw and push under lip of seal. Squeeze in grease by flattening straw between fingers.

This was posted on the Beneteau forum quite a while ago. I can confirm it works! :)

Get a drinking straw from Macdonalds (they are wider than normal)
> Push it vertically into a tub of Volvo prop shaft waterproof grease about 15mm.
> Lift it out and the last 15mm will be full of grease.
> Squeeze the end flat betwen your fingers.
> Ease the flat end into the seal under the lip with the rest of the straw along
> the shaft.
> Press your finger on the straw above the grease and slide the finger towards the seal this will force the grease from the straw into the seal.
> If you can get two hands to the seal then it is easier to squeeze the seal to
> introduce the straw.

Hope this helps
