Has any one looked at the cost of replacing the main rubber seal and ring on a 2001 saildrive leg. Can the parts be brought from abroad cheaper that the UK if so where?

I did it for someone ona GK24 about 12 years ago . No real technical problems. Just took a fair time. The owner supplied all the materials so can't help you with pricing.

There was thread on here about a year or 18 months ago about it - try searching for "Sail Drive Sealing Gasket". There was also an article in Sailing Today with step by step pictures on how to do it. I'm afraid I don't have details of the edition to hand.

Nominally they have a life of seven years but have been known to last 20. I have one and the advice I have received is not to touch it unless it starts leaking.

Good luck

I replaced rubber on a 120 saildrive two year ago. The job was straight forward but there would be insufficent time between tides..do it ashore. You will need a torque wrench, other wise standard box spanners. Cost of diaphram kit on 19/01/00 £173 ex Hawkins 01634840812.
I have a letter on file frm Volvo that quotes 7 year life, but this is always exceeded, however to presume on this might put insurance at risk

I changed my seal (not the ring) in 1998. It was a genuine Volvo one at the genuine price of £235!

It came with instructions that said it was not for the DIYer due to the dire consequences of getting it wrong but the actual mechanics of it are quite easy – apart from access to the back of my engine. I also used an excellent illustrated article in PBO ( published a short time before August 1998) telling you how to do it.

Although they will apparently last much longer than the official 7 years (mine was 11 years old) you could run into insurance or negligence problems if it failed after that date.

If I have to change it again, I will probably buy a non-Volvo version due to the cost factor.
