I have been informed that the Volvo saildive MD 2020 is fitted with a rope cutter from Volvo, does anyone know if this is true. I have a 2004 unit on a Bavaria 32 and need to identify what is the correct anode. A friend with a similar saildrive was taken to the cleaners and back by the local marine engineers. Checked all my paperwork but no answers. Thanks.

Yes it does have what they call a rope cutter, however it is only a small metal cone which fits behind the prop and it doesn't work well.

The standard volvo anode is the one to go for and they should be easily identified from the parts list. aprrox 3cm width.

Hope this helps

Rope cutter should really be called fishing line cutter because that is all it will cope with IMHO

I take it you have a variation on the 120 leg? This is what I have and I fitted an Ambassador cutter - a proper cutter with real teeth, in place of the flimsy thing Volvo issues (back in 1998)

If this interests you, the man to talk with is Robin Shaw, proprietor of Ambassador. He invented the thing and is totally familiar with all its applications, and will see you right.

In essence the Volvo anular anode is drilled to take the top key of the cutter - the part that stabilises it as the main element rotates with the prop. It costs a couple of pounds more to take the anode from Ambassador lready to install and work relaibly. I have considered drilling a regular Volvo anode, but the consequences of gertting it wrong are more than I want to undertake!

Thanks for the info. The rope cutter is likely to be ambassador as I have phoned around to find the history. It is most likely volvspec fitted it. the regular anode requires removing about 3mm using a flat linisher or similar. plus drilling out holes. best acquire the correct part.

Yup, Ambassador is the one with the serrated teeth - like pinking sheers.

If you're getting the anode (I always pick mine up from Robin at one of the big boat shows) get a set of bearings too - the half circular plastic rings that separate the two parts of the cutter. The bearings usually last several seasons (unlike other cutters!)

Good luck,

PWG
