Having had a starter motor failure this last weekend, I find that an insulated earthn motor has not been in use for many years - so I cannot get a replacement off the shelf, and Volvo want £500, but have no stock.

The repairers (in Ipswich) are going to canabalise a negative earth one to repair mine. However in the long term, would I be better off converting the electrics so that I have a standard unit with Negative earth? Whats involved - do I have to change other sensors too.

Insulated earth is new to me, so I cannot comment.

If you go for the conversion, you will almost certainly find that a Volkswagen starter motor is the same Bosch unit, at a quarter of the price. When I compared them some years ago I found that the bush materials were different, although I cannot for the life of me understand why there should be any need for this.

Sorry - Insulated return.....

I have just rung an engineer friend who says he would be very surprised if it had one. He asked did it have a third lead mounting on the barrel of the motor. - No it definitley did not not - so I have got onto the repairers to say they have muddled my motor with another one! - so waiting for their reply to confirm - if so this post is rather irelevant!

Insulated earth would only be to allow for the entire electrical system to be insulated form sea water. ie prop and shaft. As I understand it however an insulated drive coupling is more common where isolatiojn is desired. (not often)

An insulated starter would be identified by having 2 large insulated terminals rather than the usual one.
Incidentaly a starter mortor usually uses series field coil (no permanent magnet) so will rotate in the same direction regardless of +ve or-ve earth. So no difference in starter. I am not sure about new style geared starters seen on small Jap cars which may have a permanent magnet but I am pretty sure not applicable to you. olewill

I recently purchased a starter motor for a Volvo AQ 115 1970 petrol engine, I got it cheap on e-bay, but have found that it has two terminals instead of the one, it fits mechanically but I am unsure how to wire it any advice would be much appreciated.
