Loosen something on the out put side.

You don't need to, its a volvo! They'll leak on their own Could put a see thru strainer on the intake side somewhere in the pipe work. If its any thing like my volvo. the strainer is on the wrong side of the pump!

It's good practice to replace the impellor every year even though various test will show that it's pumping OK. The final test is engine temperature, if thats OK then you're pumping OK.

The loosen something suggestion, was in case he was worried that either the pump wasn't working, or if there was a blockage downstream of the pump. I didn't know volvo's would leak on their own..../forums/images/icons/wink.gif. Agree that a see thru strainer & see thru hose is best between pump & sea cock.

just crack the lid open on the raw water strainer. If the pumps are running, you'll get drenched in cold seawater spray.

Maybe I have this wrong, but wouldn't the strainer be on the suction side of the pump?

Not on the Volvo petrols it in't this means its under an almighty pressure and everything needs to be sealed very tight!
In order it goes input from leg to pump, pump to strainer, thence to heat exchanger, oil cooler, then exhaust to leg.
I believe the diesels on legs do the same.

Yup. Suction line from the pump body down to the leg, the psuhed up into the strainer and thence to the exchanger. Fastest way to clean the bilges, by far...

Strange to me, as to why you would want to suck any crap through a pump. Oh well, you live & learn.

No actually all Volvo 40 series diesels have the strainer on the suction side, the best way to determine if the pump is working is loosen the hose which connects to the exhaust elbow, you should see water coming out of it, then you know it has gone through all of the parts of the cooling system OK before it exits.
A very quick verification can be done the way we do it after working on a pump is to feel the pipe on the exit side, then start the engine and you will feel it go colder as the sea water flows through.

The whole point of having a water strainer is to prevent weeds & debris entering the pump/heat exchanger & overheating your engine, resulting in expensive damage. Therefore, I would say that anyone who has a strainer on the outlet side of the pump, it is wrong. It should definitely be seacock/strainer/pump/heat exchanger/exhaust. Therefore if it has been set up other than this, it must be wrong. IMHO of course.
