I’ve a relatively recent (4yr old) Volvo shaft seal that dribbles a little whilst the shaft is rotating though is completely dry whilst stationary. I’ve added a little grease today to see if that improves it.

Has anyone else experienced this and if so was there a solution? (Other than new seal!)

TIA

Rob

Hi

It should not dribble when rotating, assuming the lips have not inverted (not heard of it happening but never say never..) then a little grease is really your only option other than repalcement. Is the engine correctly aligned to the shaft? The seal should have lasted longer than four years unless it has taken some abuse (run when dry, engine alignment etc).

When I fitted mine to my then boat yonks ago, my first attempt resulted in the 'gland' being tightened slightly askew and it dripped a bit before I saw the problem and straightened it up more exactly. Also, it may be that your boat had a previous owner who ran it without grease or expelling air.

Our old Volvo seal did this. Adding some grease stopped the dribble for a while. When it was changed, it turned out to be uneven wear on the lip seals as a result of the engine and shaft being out of alignment, that resulting from a failed engine mount. Just keep an eye on it to see if it gets any worse.

I fitted a Volvo seal when I re-engine several years ago. It started leaking after 8 yrs when motoring so I hauled out and found that the sealing lips had all inverted... I replaced with a Radice seal which I consider to be a better design as it can be easily greased. This came with a fitting sleeve which the original Volvo seal did not(should have been but not in the box).
