Having just changed two non-functional Volvo Penta rev counters for a set of VDO branded instruments I now need to calibrate them.

According to the instruction book I need to set the number of pulses per crank shaft revolution. Would anyone know this figure for a Volvo Penta TAMD 41A.

The pulses on this engine are taken from the alternator as there is no crank sensor, I don't know how many pulses there are, perhaps someone else has the set up instructions to a Volvo rev counter which has a table with the correct code for a 42 motor.

I have the table. The row that looks hopeful says:

Code - 8
Sensor - Alternator W
Gear Ratio - 1:2
No of teeth - 45
Marine Diesel - 31-43 (assuming AD31 - KAD43)

Does that mean 90 pulses per crank revolution? not sure.

Excellent .. Thanks for your comments and the link to the fitting instructions. Having spoken to the supplier again of the rev VDO rev counters, they tell me there are two set up options. Pulse and Adjust. If the number of pulses are unknown then you can use the adjust mode to calibrate the instrument against a hand held tachometer. (which is pretty much as shown in the link provided by PaulGooch). I think this is going to be the easiest option.

Thanks again for your comments..

Cliff, based on FlowerPowers info i'd set the dip switches to off-on-off and see what it looks like. Fine tune on the pot from there.
