Has anybody out there changed a Volvo Penta glow plug. My engine as fitted to a Bavaria 38 suddenly requires several revolutions to start. The electrical diagram refers to 3 glowplugs but the mechanical diagram refers to the glowplug in the singular. The boats is in Spain so I cant nip down to look.

As others have said, there are three, before buying new ones take an old one to a motor factor and ask them to cross ref it. To check if they are duff, undo the connection to them and check for continuity with a meter, click here for the manual, http://www.beneteau-owners-association.org.uk/vp2030.pdf and here for the spares http://www.marinepartseurope.com/en/volvo-penta-spare-parts.aspx and here http://www.marinepartseurope.com/en/volvo-penta-explodedview-7746410-30-9349.aspx

Someone has posted about this before. I made a note of the part number: Unipart NGK Y107R. Yours for £8 if you Google.
However as suggested I suspect the problem will be the relay. This is a Bosch part. Here's a photo of the thing. Anyone know a generic source? I'd like to carry a spare.

PS: Can anyone open the link? Not totally sure it is shared.
PPS: Getting the top off the box containing the relays is nigh on impossible if you have a high rise exhaust manifold. It's easier to take the box off the side of the engine. When you put it back leave the screw out and put a cable tie round instead!

Noted , Did the engine start without the glowplug circuit?,Ive sourced a glowpug and relay from" Marine Parts Europe" in Sweden .The plug NGK Y107R is £8 from an Auto source in UK,the Volvo glowplug was 28 EUro and relay 7 euros

Yes it did start without the glowplug, but needed to turn over a lot more. With the glowplugs working it usually fires first time. The 'heat' light didn't come on when the switch was faulty. I have a wiring diagram, and the circuit is quite complex, as I remember the gowplug is connected 'anyway' when the starter is engaged, whcih foxed me for a bit when I was poking around with the voltmeter. On mine its a two position switch with the 'down' position being an alarm test.

Anyway, the simple test would be to see if you have power to the glowplug when the heat switch is pressed. If not, work your way back up the circuit (via the relay) to the switch.

Thanks for that info ,that ties in with my symptoms ,9 years instant start then suddenly needing to complete a fair few (heartstopping ) revs to fire up. Coming to mainland spain from the Balearics I fired up the engine every two hours which kept it warm. Bill 12
