The starter motor on my MD17D engine has died. It is apparently not repairable so I am looking for a replacement but its all a bit of a minefield. I have identified 2 different part numbers but cant find any numbers on the broken one & I cant find out what the differences are, can anyone shed any light on this for me?
The part numbers I have are 833669 and 838060 - the boat is in Spain so its a big problem if I get the wrong one.

I would hope there are still a few of the guys who would sort it out for reasonable money. I had a burned out CAV starter on a Lister. New price was out of sight, but the local bloke sorted it for for a fraction of the new.

Hi!

I'm gathering information about those two numbers for the last 30 minutes ;-)
What i can find: Both starters have had a substitue number for parts out of the exchange cyle (parts being remanufactured by Volvo). And both have the same remanufactured starter: 3803077 (discontinued)

If I compare the technical data I'd expect both starters will fit to your engine...
Volvo seems to have a version made of gold or platinum if i see the amount of money they call... (~1300,-€)
At Ebay (e.g.: http://www.ebay.de/itm/Anlasser-Volvo-Penta-12V-MD5A-MD6A-MD7A-MD11D-833669-833031-/252753503037 you can find parts with a reasonable price (200-300€), that's what I'd go for!
At a second glance I find all three part numbers listed with this starter.... ;-)

greetings from germany

Frank

Give Marine Enterprises Ltd a call in Dorset on 01935 83876. They may well be able to help you out. They are dealing with used engines continually and break for spares too. Below are two of their adverts for a Volvo MD 17D and a MD 17C breaking for spares.. Good luck..

I came petty much to the same conclusions as Seamechanic.

I believe the two alternators you quote part numbers for are interchangeable. The most important difference is that one is still available , the other is not. There seems to be very few parts available for either which may be the reason you electrician could not repair it
