The dyno start has three wires coming out of it could anyone tell me what they all do. So one live to battery charger one negative and what is the other one.

You will find a wiring diagram on page 20 of the instruction book on Dylan Winters KTL website
http://www.keepturningleft.co.uk/blogs/Volvo-md1-manual/

one connection is the dynamo output, one the connection is to the starter winding and one is the connection to the field winding. Bosch Dyna starters also have an earth/negative connection I believe while Siba ones are I think earthed through the mounting

Do a forum search. IIRC some more info was posted a few months ago

BUT BUT BUT do you really mean MDI or do you have an MD1B ... different animal for which you will find a workshop manual on Blue Moment
http://www.bluemoment.com/manuals/MD1B-2B-3B_Workshop.pdf
more or less the same wiring though

and an owners Insruction book on the Volvo Penta website http://www.volvopenta.com/VOLVOPENT...LICATION_SEARCH/Pages/publication_search.aspx

Easy to tell the difference between the two models. The MD1B has an oil filter, the MD1 (like mine) has only a strainer. AFAIK the wiring of the Dynostart is the same on both.

It's the md1b

Then you have links in my post to both the workshop manual and the owners instruction book

The control box for the dynastart contains an electromagnetic regulator and cut out together with a solenoid for the starter function. Modern replacements are probably solid state and have a separate solenoid
