Hi all

Ive recently purchased a Macwester 27, she has a penta MD 11 25hp

Whilst the engine is running, water is flowing out the side of the water pump. I have checked the impeller and water is flowing further on from the pump.

The rear cylinder head gets a lot warmer the fwd head.

Does anyone have much experience with these engines?

Any help would be appreciated

Could you be more specific as to where the water is leaking from the pump! There is a weep hole in the body between the impeller housing and the flange connecting to the engine and this indicates the seals need replacing.

If you are testing the engine temperature by touching the core plug on the rear cylinder and the core plug on the front cylinder you must remember that one is adjacent to an inlet valve and the other to an exhaust valve. They will be at different temperatures :)

There are 2 slots on the side of the pump, the water seems to be coming out of there.

Weep hole as described above but Two slots ?????? sorry..

Photos ??

Take pump off and investigate.......

Rear cylinder running hot may indicate partially blocked water inlet distribution passage in the exhaust manifold. It is a longer pathway to the rear cylinder than it is to the front one and it tends to be the first to become blocked. Take of exhaust manifold and investigate / clear if the problem persists after you sort out the water pump issue

The slots are found on some versions of pumps and are less likely to get blocked
Either way sort before water gets past 2nd seal and into oil

Here's some pics []

Slots where other (later ?) types have just a weep hole.

Whatever. the water seal needs replacing. Might as well replace the oil seal at the same time and also inspect the shaft for wear.

Also check the bearings

Thanks for the reply

Is it an easy job to replace the seals and bearings? I tried to take the bearings out earlier, but failed! What is the best way to remove the shaft and bearings?

Is there anywhere in the UK that sells spares?

Not done it on that particular type . We've done the seals in the type with a weep hole no probs on the cabin table with only a few basic tools. Cannot say I've taken the bearings out though.

Link to w'shop manual in #2

Keypart often recommended for spares

I does not look right
You appear to have the SS anchor to lock the stub pipe but no stub pipe is the hose pushed over the body of the pump?

www.keypart.com They always give advice on any problem so do ask, but a pump leak is normally the seals and it would be worth replacing the bearings. You might need a machine shop for that to get them out and replace.
