hi all, whilst on my 2 week break im cruising along nicely at 20 knots(3000 rpm aqd41a 10 year old) when the revs die on the starboard engine and theres a knocking noise coming from the back, so i immediately pull back to neutral when said engine stops(b*%$!?^¬s) says me, then try to restart it justs clicks (locked solid) next day i thought id try it and it started although knocking so switched off again. so when i get home i put big socket on crank pulley and it wont budge. thinking about taking head off to have a looksie when friend suggests it might be drive that is locked up(290 dp), the more i think about it the more logical it seems as there was no smoke oil pressure and temp was fine only done 190 hours since volvo rebuild, and if it was engine ie valve conrod crank causing it to lock up with the socket you should be able to reverse it? anybody ever heard of this before??? any info greatly recieved as its startin to get to me now. thanks in advance.

Take off rocker box only and check valve stems .Then be inclined to lift out of water and remove leg before doing anything else to engine.
Poss UJ or leg drive gear prob.?
Really ought to come out even if engine is the problem.

Not sure if this helps but I had a problem after running through a cable at 25knts.

the 290 dp had kicked up and the UJ joint was knocking around in the housing.

Engine restarted and there was maneuvering propulsion.

AD41s were fine and on lift out the Volvo engineers said there was no damage to the OD.

I had an inspection and found a hairline crack to stainless bar of transom.

I then paid for them to remove gaiter to inspect where the UJ coupling had become loose and was knocking the hell out of the housing.

Cost £4000 for upper gear box.

Haven Knox-Johnson arranged engineer/surveyor the same day and paid out with no fuss.

I mention as the engine restarted even though the leg was capputs.
The main engine crank nut does have a lot of compression and you will need to force very hard to get it to turn even when in good order.

Had it once with 290 leg.... local service agent (who shall remain nameless) had omitted to refill leg oil after draining it! and top bearing had collapsed and siezed the whole leg causing the engine to stall.

Required a rebuild of leg but no permanent damage.

Sounds very much like the U/J has collapsed, you should get the boat up incase it has torn the bellows which will allow seawater in and then it will cost even more!

Yep,

Got a Kad 43p with a 290 dp, had a nice day fishing heard a knocking on the way home, stopped the engine tried starting it again with nasty noises, got a tow in. Found out later I had dropped a valve into the top of the piston. Dont mean to put you on a downer but check valves etc, and dont start engine unless you are certain as to what it is.
Good Luck
