Had to do a fuel filter change on a fairly new VP 40hp last week as we had fuel problems. The engine had only done just over 100hrs, had had a 'service', oil filter changed but not the fuel filter. We were on a delivery trip so had taken a spare VP fuel filter with us.
My question is - Why is the replacement VP fuel filter twice the size of the original fitted? The original, still painted green, was only about 2" tall whilst the the replacement was the usual 4" tall.

Because volvo use one filter that fits many engines in its range to simplify spare holding whilst the engine builder who builds the engine for volvo may source a specific filter for the engine and the filter fitted gets painted along with rest of the engine.
Unless as in some case the replacement larger filter fouls the boat a larger area will be the better filter.

I had the same situation with my VP engine. The local VP representation offered mu to choose between a small or a larger oil filter.
They said that some engine installation are to narrow for the larger filter.
If you have space they alkso recommend the larger filter.
More filtering surface means more place to retain dirt less pressure drop and is always better.
Do to its cost I have switched to Mann filters that only cost a fraction of the price with excellent result.
