Hello all,

I need to replace the exhaust elbow on my VP D1-30. Obviously there are lots of different products out there with a big range in prices. But I found this one on eBay for about £85. I know, if it sounds too good to be true………

Just wondering if anyone has any experience of this particular item from eBay ?

Thank you.

There all over ebay and Aliexpress not heard any negative feedback .

Can you post a link Jon?
It would be interesting to know what material the seller is claiming the the elbow is made of.

Hello,
There are several on eBay. They all look perfectly legitimate and claim to be stainless steel.
I’m thinking I will buy one. The saving is quite considerable and if it turns out to be a mistake I won’t actually have lost that much (so long as it doesn’t snap off when I’m out on the water !).

I just had mine (D2-40F) replaced in Denia (Spain). If I could get a copyright on all the new swear words I invented, I could earn back the ~500 euro the genuine Volvo part cost (including gasket and installation). I noticed the exhaust stopped shipping water just outside of Valencia Mar (lovely marina by the way) en route to Faro. I figured it was the impeller so we hoisted sails and kept going. Impeller was fine, but was sacrificed on the altar of not having the expensive tool to remove it without destroying it. I removed the hose at the heat exchanger and yes, water was coming through. Made me fear for the expensive heat exchanger. I decided to remove the 90 degree rubber hose which connects the heat exchanger to the exhaust elbow. It was at this moment that I invented a whole slew of new swear words. What deranged lunatic designs a part where the two metal spigots are almost touching? The only way to put that hose on is to remove the elbow, which necessitates replacing the gasket. Anyway, water out of the heat exchanger without problem. Jury-rigged a hose and bucket and we motored in to Denia while someone below kept dumping the bucket of warm sea water. 75 miles under the keel - around 40nm from Valencia to Denia. Sigh.

The old elbow was wedged with soot. The previous owner said he always motored around 1800 RPM. Belated research suggests 2200 to 2400 with occasional 2800RPM blasts to blow out the snot. Sorry for hijacking the thread. I'd have chosen a stainless replacement, but the Volvo Penta dealer was quicker and we needed to get moving again. I'm wondering if I can de-soot the old one and keep it as a spare. Probably not. Also, I think we're down an inch on the waterline with all of the "spares" on board.

Quite a mark-up if the other suppliers’ parts are coming from the same source. I would wonder about the quality of the stainless, but anything has to be better than the cast iron part. When I removed my exhaust elbow to decoke it, the spigot for the rubber pipe fell off. I’m glad that didn’t happen at sea!

Yes indeed. I think I’ll take a chance with the eBay part. Nobody has appeared on this forum and advised against it. I half expected a deluge of people telling me not to touch it with a barge pole !
