As anyone changed the position of the dipstick on a Volvo Penta D6-370 EVC Shaft Diesel 370mhp? Ours on the port engine is difficult to get to as it is on the postside and we are a bit "beefy" to be polite. Apart from loosing a few stone the only thing is to have another put on the starboard side of engine. The starboard engine is no problem as it is on port side of engine. Just wondered if any on had actually had the dipstick resited?
Thanks
Neil

The dipstick on a D6 goes into a tube which is fitted to a square plate attached to the side of the sump, IIRC the 4 screws holding this in place are on the inside! of the sump meaning this has to be removed to swap the plate over with the blanking plate on the other side of the sump. Can't remember if the blanking plate has a fitting to take a dipstick tube or not.

This is a shot of a newer one ... the plate looks similar on either side to me.
And on a parts diagram ... parts 41 and 45 actually resolve to the same part number: 3886957

It's worth having poke around with a torch to see exactly what you have down there - if it's similar both sides, but with a hex plug on the non-dipstick side, you might be in luck.
You'd also need some brackets and bits, even if you could get access.

Thanks Flowerpower and Spannerman. It is same set up as diagram, so shouldn't be too much of a problem. Will not be able to take port side dipstick out and blank off as no room too work. Can you see any problem with having dipsticks port and starboard of engine?

It will confuse the next owner ... but i don't see why it would be a problem technically. You will be able to use the old dipstick to accurately calibrate the new one :)

Thanks Flowerpower. Shes only 2 years old so don't think will be changing boats any time soon. Cant really think what Fairline were thinking of making it so difficult, especially as two positions for the dipstick are available.
