Afternoon,

Apologies my first post being a bit of an open ended tech advice.

I'm helping someone bring back to life a penta ad41....in pretty terrible condition - lots of salt build up and rust on the turbo, alternator, fuel pump and other areas. The engine has yet to be barred over to see if it's free moving. My only concern is that it has been stored with injectors removed and not covered - exposing the engine to the elements. I'm looking to get an endoscope for a quick check before tearing into the inner workings.

My question would be - has anyone worked from and engine in this condition? Is it worth carrying on with an overhaul?

Thanks for you time.

Ian

Coastal Rides do advertise blocks/heads and other parts from time to time.
Complete running engine recently for about £8K

Why was it laid up? A definite fault or an owner starting but not finishing a light overhaul?

Sounds like a mooring if injectors our for ages and no trustworthy history...

After turning over by hand successfully, try cobbling what you have together without spending serious money and see if it runs?

I must say that the very first thing I would have done is to put a spanner on the crankshaft pulley nut and gently tried to give the engine a turn in both directions just to assess the potential internal damage before starting to dismantle.

Laid up due to a mid life crisis, unable to continue crisis due to work life. Now looking to re-ignite said crisis. All oil and fuel have been drained out so would rather turn it with some oil in. Oil change on my van should be good for a hand turn. So as of yet nothing has been done, we're at stage one - whether to take on such a job. Rumour has it inhibitor was put inside but that has all but become non traceable. Fingers crossed liners, pistons, con-rods etc are in ok condition!

Appreciate the input.

I don't really understand the "van" reference Ian, but you don't need to worry about the oil being drained out in the context of trying to turn the engine over using a spanner / socket on the crankshaft. Don't use the starter motor as that could damage things.

Jiggling the crankshaft to and fro with a spanner will tell you a great deal about the internal state of the engine without doing any damage at all. If it is absolutely rock solid after a few minutes jiggling then you can introduce a little diesel or penetrating oil into the cylinders and see if it frees up after a few days. If not, the head will have to come off and some expense is inevitable. You might consider throwing in the towel at this point.

If there is a bit of movement on the crankshaft then it could be shot bearings (bad) or sticking rings (relatively good) . You might be able to work this tiny movement into something bigger and the penetrating oil treatment is then definitely worth trying as you might get full rotation back again. You might still want to take the head off but at least you will know that it will almost certainly be worth spending the time on it. :)
