The RIB is fitted with a 150 hp Turbo Diesel Volvo Penta AD-31-P engine (serial # 220312906 / 869046). Its used commercially for diving and disposes of two starter motors per year due to corrosion problems.

The Volvo starter motor is part # 3803386. Has anyone found a non Volvo (cheaper) source of these starters or after market equivalents? I’m thinking the starters must be used in non marine applications and should be available from LSUK etc but I need to find their equivalent serial number.

Currently trying to stop starter being exposed to salt water but would be interested in alternative suppliers in case modifications don’t work.

Any info would be appreciated.

Just found out the Volvo spare part # is 3581744 /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif and the starter motor is also fitted to AD31L, AD31P, KAD32P, TAMD31L, TAMD31M, TAMD31P engines.

Check your intercooler. It has a small hole in the bottem to let water out if the matrix is leaking. This leaks directly onto the starter causing it to corrode. More importantly your engine may be gulping seawater at speed too which will eventually destroy the engines innards.
Sorry to be the voice of doom but I am speaking from expensive experience. A new set of seals and even a new intercooler matrix should fix the problem and save you a bundle in starter motors. Check on the underside of the intercooler for dampness after a run. You may even catch it dripping. If so thats your problem. Good luck

Clearly sorting out why your getting the problem is number one priorty. Can you expand on findings so far or probable cause.
Agree with doublevision / above post as that is a hidden problem which is often 'all dry' when you lift the cover due to engine heat.
For what its worth....
Have found if you take your parts into Volvo trucks they often have the same bit used commercially. Try then to obtain the part number from them for 'future reference'.
Then try a commercial type motor factors for a cross reference of the part. They are usually horrified at how much your new bit will be but its often a lot less than 'your friends' at Volvo Penta UK etc think they should charge.
You may also find that a search on the net of the part / part number from overseas (not VP UK) will also throw up some interesting prices elsewhere.
Good luck - but source / cause is whats really needed.

Re: Volvo Penta AD-31-P 150 HP Turbo Diesel Starter Motor (non volvo r

I think the twist is that they say it is spark proof, suitable for use in an enclosed engine bay, and hence a standard automotive one is unsuitable/dangerous. Irrelevant with diesel, but there you go. I'd take it to a specialist alternator/starter motor place and see what they can do.

I would go with Wiggos advice and get them to rebuild or get refurbished p/x unit

I replaced the starter on one of mine (AD31a 130hp so not sure if same) with Valeo D9R144 for £199 plus VAT in 2005; got it from a local motor factor. Been fine so far.

Thanks for the info so far.

The Valeo unit looks promising and backs up my web searches that suggest the Valeo D9R114, D9R116 and D9R144 units are all compatible replacements.

I assume that when a manufacturer has listed several compatible part numbers that we are then looking at an item that has been subject to an upgrade/revision of some kind i.e the 114 was replaced by the 116 which was subsequently superseded by the 144, would be interested in peoples views on this theory.

I have also found Lucus and Mes cross references and will post these later if anyone’s interested.

Some additional information, equiv part numbers found.
