Hi Guys...

I'm new to the forum...just trying to get some insight on a problem with my starboard Volvo Penta 435. Recently I experienced an engine shut down. It shut down with no audible warning or warning symbol appearing on the engine display. I had no idea there was a problem brewing. I had obviously experienced an overheated engine. After getting into the problem, I found that an idler pulley had virtually disintegrated leaving nothing but a damaged bearing dangling from the engine block and a pile of plastic shavings of what once was the outer casing of the pulley. Of course, the belt could no longer drive the water pump which caused the overheating and led to other damage. Guess what? At some point between the time these engines were installed and now the idler pulley's have been re-engineered. They now have a metal housing instead of plastic...imagine that! There are six of these things on each engine.

A little more history...in May of 2007 my boat was re-powered with twin 435's. This occurrence happened June 10, 2009. Technically, the engine is out of its Manufacturers two year warranty by 18 days. The real frustration is over the fact that this engine has only 82 hours on it and no one from Volvo will respond to my inquires or those of their local authorized dealer.

I do have and extended protection plan which I thought was from Volvo but apparently that's not the case. I have a protection plan with Volvo's name all over but they apparently have nothing to do with it…another day another argument in that regard.

I have authorized the local Volvo Dealer to begin the tear down to fine all the damage sustained. So far we have found water on all six pistons but no apparent cracks in the exhaust manifold or the head. There were no blow outs in the head gasket...interesting but I'm sure they will determine how the water got to all six cylinders eventually. We have suggested to Volvo that their regional representative come see this for himself. We have not heard from this request.

The real surprise was the readings from the Volvo Diagnostic Tool. It appears the warning codes were never programmed into the engines when they were installed. At least at this point we now the codes are not programmed. Perhaps this occurrence caused a loss of data...who knows. It makes since because there was no audible warning when this happened.

With all this said, my question is ….Have any of you out there experienced this sort of thing or heard tales of such? Is it typical of Volvo to ignore their customers this way? To me this is not a simple matter of being out of warranty. The plastic idler pulley’s are clearly defective and can not withstand the load. Has anyone else had this problem?
