A slight problem here, folks.

Whilst carrying out the WOBBLE check on Kalita yesterday (before a very pleasant bimble from Southsea down to Totland Bay) the engine oil dipstick was removed and wiped clean during which process the bottom 25mm (the flat part with the markings thereon) snapped off in the owner's hand!!!!!!!!

I have had a quick check on the marinepartseurope.com web site and it would appear that this part is now obsolete and no part number available! http://www.marinepartseurope.com/en/volvo-penta-explodedview-7726000-21-11593.aspx

Short of contacting every VP dealer in the country to see if they have one gathering dust on a shelf somewhere do the esteemed fora members have any practical ideas to overcome this problem?

TIA

Borrow one from another boat owner, note the dimensions, make a duplicate using a bit of rod and your existing handle.

Or ask a few engine dealers until you find a scrap 2003 and buy an old dipstick.

(VicS maybe?)
I may have one from an early mk1 Ford Cortina in one of the rat infested corners of the garage, but I guess that's no help.

Nothing more sensible than what pvb says to suggest

Trouble with making one is I guess that it has to be flexible?

It doesn't need to be flexible. The original is a rigid steel rod about 20cm long.

That will mean making a new one is relatively simple then ... Might even be possible to adapt the old Cortina one..... not offering to find it though as he probably wants a new one before the end of the decade.

If it doesn't have to be too flexible weld or get someone to weld a new end on, I guess the top end has some kind of grommet on it to prevent any oil spray escaping.

Not too sure if the two bits can be brazed as it is stainless steel and only 2mm dia.

If not brazening, then silver soldering with a strengthening bit on the shiny side, leaving the hatched side clear. The dipstick on my 2003 has a flat area where the oil level is read.

If it is the narrow round bit that has broken, then a short sleeve before brazing/silver soldering. The hole inside diameter is about 6mm or so. At least, that is the OD of my suction flask copper tube.

It is worth a try, in preference to forking out for getting one made.

Who told you to take the dip stick out? you have only had the boat two minutes and you have broken it already. Still at least it didn't break off in the sump.

How about a trip to up to Silverlake to see what is available. It's a good day out if you like wearing boiler suits and have an oily rag in your pocket.

Luckily the owner took the dip stick out not me (thank gawd!!).

I haven't had a good rummage round a scrap yard for 40 odd years - quite fancy that as a day out. :encouragement:

They are a friendly lot and cheap, well compared to the grumpy old sods I used as a teenager. H&S now requires you were their high vis vest but tell them what you are after and they are happy to let you wander around on your own.
