Volvo Penta 2003 - Car parts that fit?

I've just had an outrageous quote for a replacement coolant temperature sensor for my raw water cooled Penta 2003: does anyone know if there's a suitable alternative from a (Volvo?) car that can be used that doesn't cost me body parts?

I'd also be interested in finding out if there are other parts that the 2003 has in common with car engines or where they can be sourced without paying Volvo prices.

Thanks in Advance
Mike

Hope not, cos I just paid £55 for one from Keyparts. I'll be miffed if I could have got it cheaper (particularly as it hasn't fixed the fault!).

I'd suspect that something like the part you are trying to source is in fact a generic part made, not by VP, but by Bosch, Lucas or VDO etc. Remove it and take it along to your nearest car parts factor, not the local car accessory shop, but somewhere like CAF or Unipart. The bloke will hate you, but get him to dig out his catalogue and you should be able to 'match' one up. If I remember correctly, on the end of the copper bit that goes into the block, so it will need cleaning, you will find a number. I think that is the temperature range.

Other parts, like oil and diesel filters are easily available, if you do a search on this forum I put on a post with part numbers only recently.

Thought I'd try a google for them as "Volvo heat, temperature sensors" which came up with "Articlebase" a description of the various types of sensor, contact and non-contact and the immersible thermocouple types, that use a bimetal contact;others which actually show the temperature as degrees C.
I'll keep looking for a comparison chart cross-referencing different makes, perhaps Kubota,Perkins,Mitsubishi may have equivalents in the domestic rather than marine sources. Do you have a part number or maker's name for a starter?
Does your sensor sound an alarm rather than just the gauge showing a measurment?

The setup on my Sigma 38 is very simple: the temperature sensor only triggers an alarm (or morre correctly, it used to ...), there's no temperature gauge on my engine panel. I'm flushing the sludge out of the block this weekend (which has caused overheating recently) so will pull the sensor to see if there's any additional details on the body and try the motor factor route. I find it really hard to believe that Volvo would use anything other than a bought-in part for this application, hence the original posting.

I'm given to believe that the temperature sensors in cars are thermistors whose resistance decreases with temperature rather than one of the more esoteric types e.g. IR.

Thanks for the suggestions so far!

My mates just fitted a new Volvo 30hp in his boat. The last bit to fit was the starter motor and being an engineer he snapped the solinoid off. Volvo quoted £700 for a new starter, although they did try and find a replacement part, three times they sent the wrong bit. In the end he went to a little old bloke who works from a shed somewhere near Chichester and guess what? He had the exact part on the shelf and it cost £20. Volvo Penta and their suppliers are a bunch of thieves. If you're is this area let me know and I'll find out where the bloke is.

£680 for 20 years storage charge ?????

Remove it, take it home, place it by your computer, then search ebay for generic temperature sensors till you find on that looks the same for a fiver?

The boat isn't a million miles away from Chichester so the old fella's details would be very welcome...

Engineer at Motortech Marine has suggested leaving the cleaning solution in place for a week, so I'll pull the sensor next weekend when I flush the block.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

temp. sensor

If you were quoted more than £50 it may be worthwhile repacing the sensor and gauge. Most gauges (on ebay) come with a matching sensor. I bought one (new, with sensor) for a lot less than £50.

It is almost certainly made by a component supplier. However, that does not necessarily mean that it is widely used in high volume applications. Remember the 2003 was a unique design with no commonality with other Volvo products - and out of production for nearly 20 years!

I guess also (unlike filters etc) the demand is almost non-existent, so, much as it hurts, if you want the problem fixed you have to pay the price.

My dopey friend can't remember the name of the bloke he got solenoid from. However he was directed to him through Motortech in Chichester marina and he's based in Woodmancote Road in Southbourne or Emsworth.
Sorry I can't be more helpful.

My Volvo MD21B was made by Peugeot ( Indenor XDP90) I try and source all my spares from any patent parts manufacturer. So what you need to do is find what the base engine is. Perkins made of load of engines which were re-badged as Volvo - got to worth a look.

I have just replaced my head gasket, Volvo price 208.00€ plus VAT patent parts price 45.00€, also my starter motor is over 1000.00€ (broke the solenoid!!) from Volvo and only 450€ from Lucas Marine.

So, find out what the base engine is and you'll save a fortune.

As I noted above the 2003 is a Volvo designed and made engine only used in this application.

You are right, however, other Volvo marine engines are based on other engines, mainly Perkins, but not this one!

At the time it was a selling feature "our engines are not based on any old Japanese dump truck engine etc...." - however, it was the last engine in small hp they made themselves, which might tell you something.
