Volvo Penta 2002 oil pressure alarm before starting

My Volvo Penta2002 alarm panel displays an oil pressure alert before I have even started the engine. I have replaced the sensor and it still buzzed. If I swap the water temp wire with the oil pressure switch wire it then buzzes and lights up that light bulb. Am I right in thinking this is not the alarm panel but the actual wire? Any recommendations how I can prove this?

The older module will show an oil pressure alarm when the key is turned on and until the engine starts and oil pressure is established. The later module I understand has a delay to prevent the alarm sounding.

Normal I would have thought, unless there is some delay built in as superheat suggests,

I am sure your owners manual explains what to expect !
According to the version I am reading all three warning lights should come on. You should test the buzzer then start the engine. Then all the lights should go out.

Turn on the oil pressure light comes on and the buzzer. Start the engine and all three lights are out. Stop the engine oil pressure light comes back on with buzzer. So it does go off when running. Never used to do this just started a few weeks ago.

So before starting I get buzzer and single light lit against the oil pressure. After starting all lights go out. Then after stopping same light and buzzer come back on. Did not used to do this. Just wondering if I need to be concerned? How I get it to be the same as before with all lights lit and no buzzer.

On my 2030 (not the same engine but just about the same panel), sometimes the alarm sounds when you switch on, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes it sounds when it's switched off, sometimes it doesn't. No ryhme nor reason to it as far as I can make out. It's been like that since we bought the boat and six years later the engine continues to be as reliable as ever. I'd not worry too much provided the alarm stops when the engine starts and none of the lights remain lit.

The panel on my last boat's 2003T did exactly the same for 19 years. The panel isn't the cleverest bit of VP kit.

First, Vic has it as I understand (and witness) it.

If I understand correctly, your water and 'battery' lights do not illuminate when the panel is switched on (and they did once). These lamps find 0V at switch-on through the alternator. Assuming your wire swap between water and oil wires caused full brightness of the water lamp, then it would appear that the connection between the panel and the alternator is off-normal. This has to be a good connection for the sounder to sound under actual fault conditions.

Could you do a quick check in the switch-on (do not start engine) state : Remove the wire at the oil pressure sensor to see if the sounder stops.

[My logic is that the sounder has only one path to 0V if the panel's alternator connection is off-normal. That route is 12V supply via 'battery' lamp via 4V dropper via sounder via diode via oil pressure switch to 0V on the engine. In this case neither the water or 'battery' lamp will fully illuminate and any sounder circuit via the oil sensor will cease to exist once oil pressure is normal - as you seem to report].

Good Luck
Bob

That does sound like it Bob. So in short the alarm panel earth is possibly at fault. There has been a lot of work done just recently behind the engine after the prop had to be replaced. I'm wondering if I've caught something!! Sounds like a head torch and a trip back behind the engine beckons. Thanks to all for your time and knowledge :)
