Hi I was wondering if I could remove the relay Part No 872242 as seen in 2 pole picture ? on inspection this was totally rusted so I tried to remove it to clean the terminals and it just shattered breaking the bacolite etc so its now had it:mad:

A new one is in excess of £120 which is ridiculous so I was wondereing if I could connect straight to the alternator as in the 1 pole picture ? I only have one Battery. any comments would be gratefully recieved

Thanks
Dave

I take it you are referring to the earthing relay #6

It "earths" the engine block and starter during starting.

You would have to provide a permanent connection in place of it.

But it may cause corrosion problems with a sail drive if you have one.

You should be able to shop around and find a solenoid that could be used in its place.

I suggest you look at the wiring diagrams in the owners manual or workshop manual rather that the parts diagram in order to understand how it works

Yes thanks VicS it is indeed item 6 (earthing relay). I will try to bypass it with a permanent ground connection and see if it works, there doesnt appear to be any live connection to it, and there doesnt appear to be an equivalent on the 1 pole version picture so I was hoping it would be OK to do so. There is a small red and black wire connected to it that dissappears into the wiring harness so not sure if that serves any purpose.

Thanks

I had the same problem two seasons ago on my 2003. Mine is connected to sail drive, so decided to replace it. Bought one from volvspec, was expensive but nowhere near the cost you are being quoted! Would suggest it is worth replacing, who knows what much more expensive problem you may cause if you don't!

If memory serves me correct the early versions did not have an isolated saildrive / gear housing mounted to the engine. This was the reason for the 2-pole system. In later models they isolated the saildrive from the engine making it safe to use a 1-pole system.

So if your transmission/saildrive is electrically connected to the engine, buy a new relay or buy a new saildrive in a few years time (if it takes that long). Seems a easy choice.

You will find the wiring diagram in the owners manual at http://vppneuapps.volvo.com/ww/PIE/...403&d=Owners Publication&s=2512225&lang=en-GB

The engine block is not used for a permanent negative connection. The alternator negative is isolated and the instrument sensors are two-wire types.

But the starter motor is not isolated from the block, it uses the engine block as the negative connection
Therefore when you turn the key (or press the start button) to crank the engine the earthing rely closes to connect the engine block, and starter motor to the battery negative.

I don't see a red/black wire on the diagram. The connection to the starter solenoid coil and I'd assume the relay coil is shown as red/yellow.

I had exactly the same problem. I considered fitting a permanent earth to the engine as I couldn't really work out why it needed an isolating solenoid, but figured Volvo must have put it there for a reason. I ended up spending £8.50 on a land rover solenoid and mounting it in the existing holes on the engine, but on an insulating bracket. More info here.

PM if you want more detail on mounting etc.

Thanks for all your responses, the only official part I could find from marine parts europe is number872242 and that costs 233 euros so it loks like I will investigate alternative parts (hopefully the Landrover one may do)

Do Landrovers have earthing relays?

You may be able to use a starter solenoid but they will probably have the coil earthed to the case/mounting.
If so you could use one by insulating it from the engine and connecting the case to the same terminal as the main lead from the battery negative.

I am pretty sure I've seen that reported on the forums as a solution.

EDIT: See below.

:)

Yep. That was me - exactly what I did. The LR solenoid is not an earthing relay it a starter relay. Therefore I did exactly what you suggest as described here

If you visit www.boschautoparts.co.uk and use the dealer locator, you can find your local Bosch official parts distributor by post code or town.

Just quote the 10 digit part number on the top (for example 0 332 209 158) and the dealer can quote you price and lead time.

Trouble is, it's not a Bosch part (nothing like the relay you linked to). It's a badged Valeo ("#CEY 113") - I tried for ages to find either a pattern part or a supplier that would supply into the UK.

Thanks Nigel
I have found the exact part but its still over £150 even from the 'cheap' source I appreciate that the cost of a new sail drive would be far more expensive still so it is worth investing in the proper part, but I just find it totally ludicrous that a part as simple and small could cost so much

I am going to try Seaspray's landrover solenoid solution, until I can source a real one, it is too badly corroded to make out any markings or part numbers, but both Vics and Seaspray know exactly which part it is and all the posts have been really helpful, thanks for taking the time to respond.

I have no intention of replacing my solution with a green painted part. A solenoid is a solenoid, so as long as you take the time to make sure your new solenoid is mounted securely on a decently fabricated insulating bracket, it'll be at least as good as the Volvo original.

Or not as the case may be... :(

Hi,

the thread is pretty old but it offered the solution for me!
The Valeo solenoid mentioned above is exactly what I've found on my VP2002. Even with the "emergency" rubber button on the rear end. The difference is that a dealer here in germany asks 70€ for it and VP 270€....
That saves enough money to buy a can of VP-green to make it match the rest of the engine design ;-)

Thank
Frank
