Over heat Alarm KAD 32

Hi

Took the boat out on Friday for what would have been a 30min trip at our usual 25kt ish cruise speed.

Once out of port throttled up to/near WOT but within 2 or 3 minutes got an alarm from the dashboard and engine appeared to go in to I presume a ‘limp mode’.

Engineer came out and plugged pc in. Saw event relating to high exhaust temp. He went below deck but couldn’t see anything out of the ordinary.

We went for another run with him on board, same thing happened - he said leave engine running so he could confirm the even from the log. Plugged back in, now seeing a coolant temp high warning.

He auto-recalibrated all engine sensors.

He had to leave us but said he would check back at the yard for getting a new sensor in for Monday. Plan was we would do a further trail just ourselves and email any change.

Issue happened again when we went on that trial, perhaps a couple of minutes extra before we got the temp alarm.

Our boat is 2 years old from new and was also just recently defouled for the season.

New here but thought it worth a shot to ask if anyone knew or had heard of this type of issue or any info on this specific engine?

Found this thread first earlier which describes a very similar experience to what we were encountering fyi - could be completely irrelevant (my mistake):

You cannot recalibrate the sensors on a Volvo engine, they say what they see unless they are defect then you simply replace them.
On a V8 there first thing you check is the temp on the risers, you should be able to place your hand on them if not then there is not enoufg seawater going through them. This can be anything from blocked inlet to worn seawater pump impellor,to rust in the manifold/riser preventing good circulation. Not sureif you have freshwater cooling but if so the above still applies as the heatexchanger is dependant on a good supply of seawater.

Thanks, but there was a bit of a language barrier with the mechanic so maybe he just meant he cleared the warnings. He did think things were pointing towards a new sensor.

My main curiosity is if there’s any notorious bugs commonly explaining this particular phenomenon

I doubt if there is anything in common between your petrol V8 and a KAD32, other than the brand name attached. Spannerman has listed the typical causes, which range from a plastic bag wrapped around the outdrive water pickup, to your manifolds/risers being rusty. At 2 years old you would hope rust isn't the cause and it is just a faulty sensor. I would imagine your technician checked the actual temperature, rather than just guessing.
