I'm in the process of replacing my old MD7A/110s combo. I understood that using the old saildrive is probably not wise as the gear ratios are too low for an engine that revs up to 3600 rpm. Another low(er) cost alternative would be to source a second hand 120s, which supposedly is appropriate in terms of gearing. The new engine will probably be a 21 hp Nanni – they are happy to supply an adapter plate.

So far I've found out that there are several versions of 120s, namely 120S-A, 120S-B, 120S-D and 120S-E. Do you happen to know what is the difference and what I should look for?

Thanks!

Most of them are 2.6:1 Which is correct for the Nanni. You can download a chart from the Volvo website which gives you all the details. However your chances of finding a good used one are pretty much zero and it will be at least 8 years old. Much better to trade your old Volvo in for a new complete unit. They have areally good deal on at the moment and you will end up with a much better combination. The latest 130 leg is better than the old one and has. Better anode setup.
