Help please

My saildrive unit on V penta 2020 is it S120 seems to be building up pressure internally! I changed the oil this winter with recomended 10w -40 and now twice(one time it had stood idle for a week so oil was cold and 1 time was warm) i have checked oil level and there is pressure when i undo dip stick/filler cap. Is this normal

thanks

Yes, Mine has always done this - No problem. I also aked the Volvo guy at Chichester about the same pressure ( I thought it might be due to water ingress...)

Don't worry about it..

Although the manual says to use 10/40 engine oil in the saildrive, apparently some later units now should be run using something called ATF (?). I checked my serial number with RK Marine who confirmed my saildrive should be filled with ATF, not 10/40 as stated in the manual. Surprisingly, ATF was cheaper!!!
I don't think the ordinary oil actually does any harm, but the other stuff is apparently more appropriate. Might be worth checking.

If the ATF is the synthetic oil (as mentioned on the yellow label_ which I missed until I saw it menioned on the forum some time back!!) it is a higher temperature transmission oil- according to the tin. And I found it was more expensive-grrr.

My understanding (as a 120SB owner) is that is you have a 110S, 120S or 120SB you use normal diesel engine oil. If you have a 120SC you should use ATF. You can see the model of your Sail Drive on the plate on the aft end of it.

I'm 120SC onwer.
Thankyou for your advice on using ATF in my gearbox. So, off I trot to a local car parts place:

"A bottle of your finest ATF please"

- "Very well sir, and what grade would that be?"

"Errr, what grades do you do?"

- "Well sir, we stock 6 but I know of at least 6 others, it's very important you know, different boiling points and all..."

'Tis awfully difficult this boating business. Can someone please suggest a grade or brand that would do the job in a 120SC...

Many thanks,
Manumanitas
