I would like to service my oldish Volvo 280 outdrives - I've never done this before (recently got the boat)

Is there an idiots guide to the job - step by step to servicing 280's?

Is changing the big bellows a job I can do? (I don;t know when they were done last)

What are the problems to look out for?

I am thinking of paintin the outdrives with two-part epoxy - how 'clean' do I get the outdrives of old paint/antifoul etc (do I need to go back to the aluminium - and what should I use to do the cleaning - and what about all the nooks and crankies!

With regard to servicing its a piece of wee.
1. Drain old oil and refill to level of dipstick with 10w30 or 40 oil.
2. Dont overfill, as the 280's are quite critical of levels.
3. Check old oil for emulsification. Any sign of water must be investigated. I have 280's on my Fairline Mirage and some times have a little bit of emulsification and some seasons none at all. I just live with it. If y0ou have the time, leave the boat out of the water for a week or so and check all seals etc for leaks.
4. Remove props and clean the line cutter discs behind them. Grease the shafts with a nice waterproof grease and refit the props. DO NOT FORGET TO SECURE THE LOCKING TABS AGAIN.
5. The bellows are easy to change. But a spare of hands to lift the outdrive nakes life better.

I would personally recommend the following books. Both available from Amazon.com mail order. Just type in the following ISBN Nmbers and you can place the order.

SELOC STERN DRIVE 1968->91 ISBN No.0-89330-011-X
VOLVO STERN DRIVE MANUAL 1968->1993 ISBN No. 0-89287-638-7

Hope its all of some use.
