Volvo outdrives

The leg at most would hold 3/5 litres of oil so lets say 4 kilos.My guess is the amount of material and construction of the leg accounts for the difference.Volvo in the past appeared to have leanings toward building a more durable piece of kit than its main rival.See how many old 270/280 outdrives are still in regular use while the competitions offerings have long disintegrated into a pile of powdery aluminium oxide
 
my old volvos held a lot of oil.

my old merc held very little oil but had a resovoir inside the boat hull that could be topped up.
My old volvo couldnt really be topped up without being out of the water.
There was a kit that could be reto fitted for the volvo.

Both mercruiser and volvo were kind to me and I found both gave lasting service.

My Malcruiser legs munched rams and crunched top bearing sets with gay abandon and that was the reliable partner in the leg/engine combination.
Ahhh still remember that evocative all pervading smell of hot rubber and steam mixing with the oil in the bilge from the leaky front crankshaft seals when yet another hose gave way cos the risers were blocked with internal scale flaking off the corroding engine block,that was of course if the engines actually started .....sigh.
 
Your right on whats seemingly quoted for the weights.

The VP 3.0 at 331kgs is for engine, transom shield, drive as a dry weight. I dont imagine the real life weights differ all that much, after all they are all bar the same engine.

Just for interests sake, look at how very different the prices are!

And no before all you VP bashers out there say it, its the VP thats by far the lower cost package!!!
 
Yes true but a little more up to date. A little more refined.
As of the mid-end of this year Mercruiser stop production of all carb`d engines. MPI only. All to do with the Swiss but now the Calofornians are hotter on emissions.
