Im sure this subject has come up before, but Im interested to know if anyone has actually been successful in maintaining clean outdrives . My Volvo DP,s become very contaminated with barnacles and weed very quickly, despite antifouling every year. I use volvo,s outdrive paint and recommended antifoul (aerosol). Im moored in salt water Devon.

We are currently in the process of carrying out a test of outdrive antifoul paints for drives, to be published later in the year. Last time we tested them Seajet Pellerclean came out tops, although personally I have had reasonable results with International Trilux, the paint on version not the spray can.

Trilux a/f paint isnt bad;you can get 750cl tins I think in grey, and is safe on aluminium.
Much better than the usless sprays.

Hi Neale,

The sterndrive antifoul question is very interesting, I need to do mine within the next week. Trilux has been recomended to me by a few people, Seajet 034 Emperor is suggested as being suitable for Alloy, so I think I will try it this year because the distributor is local to me.

On a seperate matter Neale, I have been meaning to contact you re your interest in Bayliners !

Feel free to PM me. Ref Seajet, try Pellerclean.

For the outdrive where I seem to get very good results in the last two years is using Premier outdrive antifoul paint for aluminium which is about £16 a tin. But before I paint that on I sand down to a good base usually to the original volvo paint and then add two layers of Hemel Underwater primer and then two coats of the antifoul. This has been much better than propshield I tried and 100% better than volvo own antifoul spray paint. Trilux provided good results but went off that because of price, like many International paints products.

For the props, I have managed now to almost last the season without losing the antifoul paint or where it flakes off. The key for me is to sand down to bare aluminium and then apply several layers of epoxy, then Hemel underwater primer and then the Premier outdrive antifoul paint. I no longer suffer from pits in the props and they last for many years (providing I don't bend a blade).

The antifoul outdrive paint: http://www.discountantifoul.com/premier-outdrive-antifouling-p-21.html

The only thing I would add, the premier outdrive antifoul paint is a little thick and prehaps not as smooth to apply as trilux, but you can thin it down a little - not tried that though.

The key point no barncles but do get some weed towards the end of season, but washes off in most cases when boat is in use, or just a quick wipe off with a brush.

I am halfway through doing this myself, lots of info about painting drives on the web got me quite confused as most were for total strip back and repaints without antifouling.
In the end decided on two coats of primocon followed by two of Trilux on top of whatever was there already (there were some patches of bare ali showing).
Ofcourse I wont know if its any good or not till next winter!!!!!!

That is exactly my dilemma. So many very welcome responses to my initial question, but the varied answers do still leave me a little confused. Trilux comes up regularly, which I have used before with rather unsatisfactory results,I tried Propshield ,much the same, and a bugger to get off following season. Seajet Pellerclean sounds promising, quite pricey but if it works then its worth it. I shall await any more suggestions and then act on the forums best suggestions next week when I lift my boat for its scrub. (been in use all winter)Incidently last year we coppercoated her bottom. From what I can see around the waterline ,it really looks promising. I shall advise the forum how its worked over the last year.

I'm surprised about the dismissal of the International trilux in the aerosol cans (prop-o-drev) I've been using it for years and find it ok. No barnacles or mussels, just a bit of weed that easily brushes off and the drives clean up perfectly with annual lift and pressure wash. It is pricey, I need 3 cans to do two drives and two shields @ about £30 a can.

My guess would be that many people who use it simply don't put enough on. It's easy with a spray can to do a light coat when the brush on Trilux goes on nice and thick. I would probably suggest using both. The brush for the large easier to get at areas, and the spray for all the nooks and crannies that are hard to get at.

+1. I've had good results with trilux prop-o-drev too. I also agree about needing at least one can per drive.
