Volvo oil cooler

Hi can anyone help save me a lot of money. I have a very old Princess 41 with TAMD 60B engines mated to Twin Disc MG502-1 gearboxes. There was oil in the exhaust outlet which I believe came from the transmission oil cooler. On checking the cooler it is corrosion damaged in the element but also the housing making it beyond repair. This part from Penta is in excess of 2,000 Euro's. Surely, there is a cooler that can replace this unit for a more reasonable fee. What do you know my boating friends?

Hi There, I have managed to solve this issue after a lot of trawling around on the web and a few phone calls. Lancing Marine supply Bowman oil Coolers and went to a lot of trouble to find a suitable replacement that they offered as a kit with two new hoses and connectors. I simply bolted it on and all the connector parts fitted perfectly. The Bowman EC100 unit is good quality and costs a mere £201 including VAT and delivery. I'm sure that the 2,000 Euros genuine Volvo Penta item has qualities that cannot be repeated by mere mortal engineering companies but as the warranty ran out over 30 years ago I'll take my chance on a more modern unit that is manufactured from what would appear to be superior materials.

The Bowman EH range of tranny heat exchangers are of a very old and well proven design. Fitted as standard to Perkins, Sabre etc etc. I encourage people to re-use the Bowman units when replacing Perkins 6.354's as they are still as good today as they were back in the 1960's.

Modern transmission heat exchangers are at best poor quality, throw away units.
