My cruiser is on dry land undergoing a refit. Because of lack of time ( and poor organising) I failed to change the oil (twin AD31DPs) before the lift. Is it permissable to run the engine up without raw water cooling just long enough to warm the oil before draining? Would very much appreciate some guidance here from learned forumite,s

i would say don't do it,1st your oil will take quite a while to warm up,way before this happen's i believe your impeller will have melted!!!,i also think that the sea water help's to cool the exhaust,regards m m 1.
 
yes sir you are quite right this time,it may be a safer way to warm his oil,regards m m 1, /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif.
 
there s also the question of whats holding it up. If its in a full cradle, its not going to fall over. If its on stilts/supports... well,they just could wobble loose, which is why its not usually done. The marina might not be happy either if you roll into the next boat : /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
 
It is done all the time.
Not best practise but easily done.

Remove the impellers, run for a short time to stir the oil up.

Change oil, simple as that.

In truth unless you actually cast off and run your engines for 10 miles there is little effect on your oil just reving the guts out of it while in a marina anyway.

Well I sit firmly in the 'NO' camp on this one!

I would rather risk leaving some old oil in the system, which is likely to be fitted with a new oil filter anyway, than any possibility, however small, of damaging an engine component or my boat!

Running the engine:
Likelihood of damage = 2 possibly 3
Severity = 2 possibly 3

Not running the engine to heat the oil:
Likelihood of damage = 1
Severity = 1

No doubt been done before without any problems, but I don't think I would want to risk it! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
 
No, you risk much damage (plus error codes stored in the evc computer memory, if you have this). Just stick a fan heater in engine room for an hour or two and you'll get it up to 30deg anyway
 
OK everyone, I think I,ll not take any chances, and probably wait till my lift back to the water on April 25th, give her a blast to the IOW and back,and change the oil then, like I should have done before the lift out. Thanks a bundle for your responses. NW.
 
Good plan, in my experience unless the boat has has a good run the oil doesn't get hot enough to come out using a Pela type vacuum extractor.
 
Sorry to disagree but no self respecting engineer would follow your advice which is plain irresponsible, and its not done all the time! If you do you will burn or damage at the very least the rubber section on the exhaust below the turbo. When the boat is on the water again there is then a risk of sinking if this is on or near the water line, seen several boats lost because of seawater leaking past the rubber section on the exhaust.
