Volvo MS4A gearbox

How did they manage to use MS4 and HS1 on the same boat? the HS1 is a much larger bit of kit.
What was the original set up on these boats?

Both boats a Corniche and a P35 originally both had MS reverse gears installed from new.

AFAIK the physical dimensions and the output shaft down angle on the Volvo Penta HS1 and the MS 3/4/5 series reverse gears are indentical.
Its the added work to connect the hydraulics which are a faff. ?
It is the alternative boxes ( ZF 45 etc) which have different lengths and downshaft angles, which require jiggling the engine mount locations.
Very happy to be corrected.

One chap had a MS3/4 fail in a early Princess 33 flybridge with 165 Hp engines , DIY replaced both boxes with a pair of ZF 45 obtained from Lancing Marine who were doing a deal at the time, did not bother with repitching, sold the boat immediately afterwards.

Recently moored alongside a Corniche 31 purchased from new at a boatshow by a RCC club member,possibly now on its 10th owner ?????
Buyer from new had persistant problems with one of the MS gearboxes and eventually Volvo Penta gave up fitted a pair of brand new HS1 to make him go away. Gratis.
