Mirage Aft

I have a 1983 Fairline Mirage Aft Cabin with a single prop shaft. It has a Volvo Penta 69hp with a MS3B gearbox.
Generally it slips in and out of gear with no problem. The oil is clean and the cables appear to be adjusted well.
After a run of about 40 mins (between locks on the Thames), as I am approaching a lock mooring and slip into neutral, it will no longer go into forward or reverse gear, either at low or high revs. If I leave it for a few minutes, the problem seems to fix itself. Unfortunately this can be too late to avoid very stressful manoeuvring!
My thoughts are that maybe it's related to the cone clutch or the slip clutch mechanism attached to the gearbox but I am only guessing.
I hope that someone can help me understand what the likely cause is. The engine has done about 1850 hrs.
