Evening all.
my ms1 gearbox on my Volvo MD2B operates no problem but is now leaking quite a lot of oil from the gearshift area. Presumably the o rings have gone on this assembly.
Does anyone know if this assembly can simply be lifted out after undoing the four bolts ( and removing the gearshift cable) for repair, or does the box need to come out and stripped down? I do have the workshop manual but it is not clear in the schematics or the instructions whether this can be done insitu.
Grateful for any input,
Pete.

Looking at the manual, it seems that it will just lift out (they refer to it as the "manoevering mechanism"!). There's only one O-ring, but there's also a seal, and you'd need to replace both. Doesn't seem to be any reason why you shouldn't do the job in situ.

I dont have the maual but there are some schematics Here which can be enlarged that might make things clearer. I guess we are looking at either 833558 or 833860.

I thought they might be but being able to enlarge them on line may make them easier to read.

many thanks for your replies. Yes, marine parts express schematics are a great resource, especially,as Vic suggests, v.clear when enlarged. From that it would appear that the clip holding in the detente balls and springs are going to be a real fiddle. Not sure if this is removed at the last moment during assembly ( so the springs and balls cunningly drop into the box as soon as you lift it out !) or whether it is a permanent fit. Just to make it all easy, its 2 feet down a hole under the cockpit ! Hey Ho !

I have to say it's a long time ago, but I remember removing my MS gearbox when the cone clutch failed. AFAIR, it came out as a simple unit & the gearchange mechanism was not affected.
I undid the drive shaft & slid the prop back as far as the rudder to give me some space. I then unbolted the gearbox from the engine & lifted it out. In my case the thrust bearing had failed so it would not stay in neutral. Once out of the boat on a bench it is pretty simple to deal with - and no risk of any bits dropping in the bilges either.
But I am an old man & have a poor memory these days. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I do remember I was glad to replace the 35 year old Volvo with a new Yanmar last year! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Have you really got the workshop manual?

Have you really got the workshop manual? It tells you exactly what's involved with the springs and balls. It isn't a clip, it's a bit of wire, and it goes in a groove, and its only purpose is the hold the springs in long enough to assemble the bits.

Maybe you should actually get hold of the workshop manual and read it carefully before you start messing about with your gearbox.

springs and balls cunningly drop

[/ QUOTE ] I'd have wondered about that but then I don't have the W/S manual. Now that PVB has explained what the locking wire is for I'd go for it but I would be ready to catch 'em just in case they fell out as it'll be as much a problem to retrieve them from the bilge as from the box. I was also wondering if the wire is permanent or just an assembly aid. Surely it must be clear from the manual.

I find it a bit surprising that it is losing a serious amount of oil from there. Are you sure the four bolts have not simply worked loose and could therefore be tightened.

Or download for free...

The MD1B workshop manual (which includes the MS gearbox) can be downloaded free in minutes from here on the BlueMoment website.

can be downloaded free in minutes

[/ QUOTE ] Even quicker than that, seconds. I thought it would be somewhere on-line.
Unfortunately the dismantling instructions seem to be cut short in mid sentence with regard to removing the bit in question but it is clear from the reassembly instructions that the wire is left in position.

No problem doing this job I reckon but I am not offering to go to Scotland to do it!

Re: Or download for free...

pvb & vics, many thanks for your interpretation of the schematics and instructions. that exactly was the nub of the question, ie, whether it could be done at all, and whether the clip/wire / whatever was permanent or an assembly aid.The bolts are tight. This item has seeped a very small amount of oil for some time but last season ,in not a lot of hours managed to half empty the box into the bilge, so I guess i`ll be stripping it, hopefully the parts will be available. I`ll try volspec tomorrow.
The manual is of course on the boat, and not in front of me, so thanks again to all for your input.

Is it not worth paying the extra pence and getting from the dour oracles of Volvo Knowledge The McDonald Brothers.

Yes maybe a bit dour and maybe your engineering techniques may be questiioned however they are a font of knowledge on all things Volvo so should be able to come up with the do's and don'ts...

I must say I quite engoy the occasional session in their stores though as a welshman it did take me about 10 years to realise that even dour scotsmen have a sense of humour.

They now operate from Hillington Ind Estate by Glasgow airport but be sure you have the correct identity of the gearbox to get off on the right foot......

[/ QUOTE ] That sounds a lot of oil to lose from there. Are you sure that it is not being lost via one of the oil seals front and rear (or from one of several gaskets or plugs).

regarding the manual, it'll be well worth downloading a copy from the link given by pvb then you can keep one on the boat and still have a copy at home.

Re: Or download for free...

Yes, John, I have dealt with MacDonalds in the past, and they are certainly the oracles of Volvo knowledge, but also I have found them to be `Guardians` of this knowledge - unwilling to do themselves out of any possible work fixing your machinery. Thanks for the contact details.

Re: Or download for free...

It is a lot of oil. Top of box fairly wet with it and dripping into bilge. I cleaned it all off, topped up the box to the mark, then used the boat as normal for a few hours, then found the top of the box wet again. There isn`t really anywhere else high on the box for the oil to come from.

Re: Or download for free...

This may not apply as I don't know the box in question, but does it have a dipstick on the top?
We had a problem on our club workboat this year when a member checked the gearbox oil level, but failed to put the dipstick back in correctly, the gearbox half emptied itself into the bilge in an hour or so.
