I have an MD6 that I am changing gearbox on, there's a gear mounting to what looks like the rear end of the crank shaft, any idea how to get this off ie personal experience. I am trying to avoid removing the engine.
Also, the engine is running at a low RPM and doesn't respond to the throttle, can this be due to air in the system or ???

Do you have the owner's handbook available free for download from Volvo Penta.

Presumably the exterior controls on the fuel pump are functioning correctly and as the engine is running steadily? but below speed the fuel pump may be dirty and needs the services of a diesel injection engineer to clean and overhaul it. If it is constantly running below speed irrespective of load it is more likely to be dirty and if it will run at its required speed lightly loaded fuel supply may be the problem, caused by some restriction in the fuel supply such as dirt blocking filters in the tank, lift pump or disposable filter cartridge.

Air leaks between tank and injection pump would result in air in the injection pump which can be seen as bubble filled fuel from the bleeding nuts.
