So with much effort I've got the nut off the flywheel, but I can't get the actual flywheel off. Is it just heat and brute force or am I missing something (more than likely).

Thanks in advance

Is it on a taper? If so its going to need a fair bit of brute force. Some heat as well

got the proper puller or something similar.

Thanks guys. I had a puller on it last night (and managed to break one of the feet in the process). I guess I'll put the puller back on, a bit of heat and a bigger hammer......

One of the feet. ?????/

You are not using the correct type of puller!

See the illustrations in the workshop manual, in the text and in the list of special tools, of part no 884078. It bolts on with 4 high tensile bolts!
Use a puller of that type.

I've done this a couple of times on a MD11D - same problem I think. I used a two-bolt puller from a diy car source (bolts onto the flywheel with two bolts then wind the big central bolt into the flywheel). As others say, tension it up as much as you can/dare, then hit it hard on the big middle bolt with a lump hammer. If you are bold enough the flywheel comes off with an explosive bang (beware of it falling - it's very heavy). It feels all wrong to hit the engine like this, but needs must. An ordinary puller just won't tension it up enough.

You've done well to loosen the nut - I think I had to resort to a chisel and lump hammer on one occasion despite using a 2 foot socket handle and a 3/4 inch socket.

I've got an md1 and am interested to know how to get the flywheel nut off for future reference. I believe its the same as an md2.

ISTR putting a puller on mine & cranking up the pressure a bit & then whacking the flywheel from behind with a heavy mallet, all the way around. Then crank up the puller a bit more. It is VERY heavy, so take care when it loosens, it will pulp any fingers or toes in the way & won't do your hull a power of good either.

Slacken nut so you have a 1 mm approx clearance.

Start engine and allow to tick over.

It will be obvious if the flywheel comes loose.

Thanks guys. I eventually got it off using a rubber mallet and striking it hard with the puller on, and just increasing the puller pressure over time. It was a standard 3 legged puller that I used as that was all I had available. I left the nut on so as to retain the flywheel in place.
