I think I need to replace my engine battery.

Ity is currently an AGM battery, 50ah and 800cca.

I would really like more capacity since it also powers my windlass.

Do I really need 800cca on the engine?

I believe it is a Perkins, as used in the Montego 2.0 Diesel.

Surely 800cca is over the top?

Then I ask myself why it was fitted in the first place, and worry!

Any input gladly received.

Thanks

Tony.

Montego, Maestro, LDV van, Perkins Prima 50. Basically a 2 litre diesel engine used in all of these I have a battery specced for a tranny, works ok, dont know the amp hrs, the windlass is wired thru a relay to the alternator so that it wont work unless the engine is running. bene 381 MD22, MS2 box and prop shaft.
The engine parts off ebay will fit except for the coolant water pump, it is made especially for this engine.

An 096 battery is what they put into the BL cars/vans, and is perfect as a starter battery.

Your owners manual, q.v. specifies a 70Ah battery...( no mention is made of CCA)

The 096 batteries suggested by Bobc are typically of the order of 70 to 75 Ah and 650 to 700 CCA

if space is important you may be able to fit a Red flash battery which will give you the CCA rating in battery physically smaller and with a smaller Ah capacity .

Your current battery is OK and a similar replacement will do the job, as will an Odyssey or a Red Flash. You really don't need greater capacity for a start battery. The windlass should be wired to the house bank, not the engine start battery. An engine start should be solely for the engine, with an option to switch to the house bank should the start fail - unlikely if you have a split charge system.

Indeed, I would like to change that. It is on the priority list but not high.

My logic is that the engine will almost certainly be running when the windlass is being used.

The electrical system is strange.

The engine charges everything, that is: House, Engine and Bow Thruster.

Shore power charges House only.

I intend to fit VCRs to charge the Engine and BT.

Right now I have C Tek monitors on both.

Thanks

Tony
