My engine starter motor, a Presolite 20550101 has failed, the only thing wrong is the solenoid, motor runs ok. Apart from buying a complete new unit, expensive at over £400. Any recommendations for getting spare solenoid or equivelent. As Presolite say no spares available.

Thanks

When you say the solenoid has failed can you define "failed" Has it burned the coil out or is mechanically stuck?

Just checked here

It says it is 24v? Are you sure you have the right number?

I'd suggest contacting Wood Auto, they are good people and know about starters - https://www.woodauto.com/

If you really need a new starter, I'd have thought you could have found one for a lot less than £400.

No need for more sarcastic comments off you thank you. I used their website because I was in contact with them the other day to source some spares for a fellow forumite who is out in Cuba. They were superb in their tracing of the Prestolite part needed and went the extra mile, phoning me back when they had found it. So the site may have a mistake, so? Better to ask the OP to make sure they are after the same part?

PS lets not do your usual scrap with Stu eh?

If you have to get a complete starter motor you will often get one from a tractor repairer at a fraction of VP price.
The issue with the MD22 and quite a few other VP engines is that they are insulated negative earth and so require starters with a negative wire to them. Tractor engines dont usually have that. Also the Perkins engine that is the base for this, On the vehicule based engines the starter is on the other side. The VP version is opposite, presumably to allow room for the heat exchanger.

BTW I found this on the DFJ website https://www.dfjauto.com/DFJ020309 Looks like a not too bad a price compared with some

Not sarcastic, factual. You could learn from that. But probably not.

I've decided to sail around with a spare one, so got this one (170 EUR). It's the insulated marine version and has everything except the green paint. Seller did even ship to Portugal without flinching. Fits our MD22L-B (check Volvo partnumbers - he has others too).

PS, as tight as I am I must say that even though I have said what I have said about the negtive earth situation, I would be tempted to make the negative ground starter work!

Ok I would think with a shaft drive but the troubles might start with a saildrive as there is no electrical insulation between the SD and the MD22.

A solution might be to fit an earthing solenoid that closes to connect battery negative to the block during cranking ..... similar to the system used on some of the earlier engines before they did the SD/ engine isolation thing. It would avoid the permanent negative connection.
