My MD22 starter motor, a Presolite 2055010, the replacement for the OM part, solenoid has failed, coil engages but motor 12v contacts not making. But motor works.
Trying to get hold of a new solinoid, but failing to do so as seems to a "special". Have spoken/contacted Presolite UK and head office in US and both stated spares not available, only as a complete starter motor, and also tried local agent. At nearly £400 would like to repair/replace solenoid before buying a complete unit.

Any ideas on how to repair, get replacement solenoid please.

If the coil is working then its just a simple mechanical issue. If you dont want to do it yourself then a local auto electrician should be able to fix it.
 
Have been the auto electrician route, but same problem, cannot take apart the solenoid to get access to the contacts as the solenoid body is a "pressed" fit. And this is the reason I cannot fix. Can get access to the coil but that's it.

If you're sure it's just the solenoid contacts, can you adapt a solenoid from a similar sized starter? Even if you have use a second hand one.

Just spoke to the South African at Prestolite, I suspect you have as well. He is of the same opinion as me, carefully "peel" the pressed bit back and figure a way to then fix it afterwards. He said they deal with Ribbelsdale Auto Electrics, worth giving the guys a shout to see if they can do anything, tel 01772 796047

Could you wire in a solenoid from an old car, the type that was screwed to the inner wing of the car? Lucas type that can either be electrically, cable or push button operated.
Readjust the wiring on the starter and it should work at least until you get a proper replacement.

Should n't think so

They will be for inertia type stater motors whereas the OP's Prestolite is a pre-engage type in which the solenoid also operates the engagement of the pinion with the ring gear.

Yes, but the solenoid is still working and if wired correctly it could still work and the main feed could bypass the burnt contacts with a bit of ingenuity.

If the current solenoid is engaging the pinion but the contact are not making and spinning the motor (it sounds like it is) then you are correct. However, you'd need to make suitably heavy cabling up from the faulty solenoid to the new one and also incorporate a small delay between the original solenoid engaging the pinion and the new solenoid spinning the motor, or it won't be doing the pinion or the flywheel ring gear any favours.

Better to prise it apart methinks though.
