In changing the cam belt seen signs of water from the fresh water pump, so taking off the pump to check. For refitting the pump the manual mentions applying a sealant for the seal. My question is what sealant do I use?

thanks

Peter, water could be coming from the cover plate or it could be escaping along the shaft. I've found that the cover plate can be sealed by a new gasket alone, with no need for sealant at all. A small amount of water escaping along the shaft usually isn't a problem straight away - you can see the water flying off the shaft whan the engine is running - but it could be a sign that a seal needs replacing soon. If that is the case then it would probably be worth buying a pump repair kit now and rebuilding the pump at your leisure later. In addition to the seal, the repair kit contains all of the parts that you'll need and it's quite a simple task and can be done at home.

Which MD22 do you have? Mine is an MD22A as fitted to many Bavarias and I have just had my pump off and reconditioned by the Albanian Engineer at Gouvia, Corfu. He replaced the bearing and seals and also re-faced the backplate all for €70.

Some of the pumps fitted to other MD22 variants have an "O" ring to seal the backplate and others, like mine have a paper gasket. This gasket MUST be replaced every time the backplate is removed and although, theoretically the gasket shouldn't need any sealant a non-setting type like Blue Hylomar ensures a watertight seal. As to disregarding a small leak on the shaft, I would advise that any leak needs to be dealt with asap unless you like your cast iron engine block, several dissimilar metals and wire braid covered fuel lines taking a salt water sauna (not to mention the effect on the electrics and your self adhesive sound deadening foam!). The engine will soon start to look like a shambles and the situation will only get worse.

Blue Hylomar is pretty good.

Could I ask in return, age of engine, type A or B? indication of hours run?

Many thanks,

For just sealing a seal into its housing ?

If so, as suggested above, Hylomar Universal Blue should do the trick.
