Having trouble identifying what HP my engine is, serial No missing and no other information…. . The MD 22 comes in 2 sizes 50hp at 3000rpm and 59hp at 4000rpm. I’ve been told that if I run the engine in max revs in neutral it will run at approx 3500rpm for the 50hp engine or approx 4500-500rpm for the 59rpm. This would indicate the engine size. Is this statement true?
In neutral I’ve got appox 5000rpm, reduced revs at that point as the engine noise was putting me off

Yes and no. There were several variations but basically 59 hp at 4000 rpm or 50 hp at 3000 rpm but the latter is the MD22L-A with a sail drive I think you will find.

However go to HERE, stick MD22 in as the engine type and you'll get a list with some details. Click on those of interest and you'll get more detail and the opportunity to download brochures and an owners manual if you do not have one. (At least you should do but i dont!)

Not a direct answer perhaps but maybe with the info from the VP website you'll find what you want to know

Sorry it looks as though either there are no publications available or the website is not functioning properly

you may be able to identify the engine from the transmission number
the saildrive was used on various power out put

the location of the oil filter will give some indication as to which engine it is

try it in gear!

[/ QUOTE ] I suspect the logic was that the engine would be governed to a max rev just a little above the figures quoted in the rating. IE a bit more than 3000rpm for the 50hp MD22L, a bit more than 4000rpm for the 59hp MD22 and a bit more than 4500 for the 78hp TMD22A. A bit of a surprise then that it went to 5000rpm, assuming it is not the TMD.

The VP website is playing ball now and it is possible to download an owners manual, and a couple of brochures, but the only other thing that says is that the full throttle revs ranges are 3200 - 4000rpm for the MD22, 2700 -3000rpm for the MD22L and 4100 -4500 for the TMD.

The conclusion I have come to is that the 59hp engine is mated to a straight or down angled dive, the 50hp engine is mated to a sail drive and that the TMD is the turbo charged version rated at 78 hp.

sorry but all the engine and transmissions were mix and match
the earlier engines had the oil filter screwing down onto the oil pump whilst the later engines had the filter screwing up to the pump
the fuel pump may have a number on it that can be matched but the transmission should have a volvo serial number which should be traceable to the engine
