Hi I'm after a few parts for my MD2040.

The end cap on the exhaust water muffler has corroded and leaking. The complete Part is 828064, approx £290 + delivery complete. Does anyone know if the S/S end caps are available as the sites i've looked on state obsolete. Getting parts in Spain is a joke as there twice the price of UK parts. I was quoted €360 for a replacement cast iron exhaust elbow last year but upgraded to S/S from parts4engines for about £60 less including delivery and taxes post brexit to the marina in Spain

I also need to upgrade the alternator drive belt from V belt as the V belt wears very quickly due to the load from the charging system means it needs tensioning every couple of days and also makes a mess with the black rubber. I would like a multi V "serpentine" belt hence is there anywhere that does a conversion for the pulleys and belt.

Thanks

Ross

It is possible to reweld the end cap. They usually fail just under where the downstream pipe exits the end plate. I had this done recently for about £50. However if it is too far gone the long term solution is to replace it with a plastic waterlock such as this vetus.com/en/exhaust-systems/waterlocks/colector-8335.html which I have on the same engine or this https://www.vetus.com/en/exhaust-systems/heavy-duty-waterlocks/vetus-hd-waterlock-muffler-type-nlp which is more flexible in terms of fitting in awkward places. The first type is less than half the price of the Volvo type and pretty sure you will have a Vetus dealer in Spain.

Can't help much with the belt, but surprised you are having having problems because it is not a known issue on these engines with a standard alternator. Suggest you look at alignment of the pulleys and any signs of corrosion first, plus perhaps change to a better quality ribbed belt such as these c-rproducts.com/products/drive-belts/ribbed-belts/ - many different brands available

I had to replace the plastic type mentioned by Tranoma last Summer. I purchased from SVB in Germany. It was on a MD2040 (on a Bene 373) If your'e in Spain, SVB may be a good source as you'll save yourself Duty and Vat from the UK to Spain. It cost roughly € 300 . The key measurements are the Hose Diameter and the holding Capacity of the Muffler. It must be large enough to hold the volume of water remaining in the exhaust line after the engine is turned off. The Vetus site gives the calculations.

Many thanks for the prompt / informative replies. the hose connections are 45mm. I'm heading out to the boat in early 2022 if were not too restricted on travel and i will probably remove the muffler then strip it out and see if our local fabricator in Santa Carles can repair for a reasonable cost before going down the Vetus route. Working down below doing mods to pipework in the bilge is best avoided unless there is a substantial cost saving so i will probably go down the plug and play route.

The main issue with the alternator belt has been that i use a sterling smart charging system to manage the charging of the batteries and this stops the alternator from trickle charging once the house battery levels recover to 80% . My alternator will produce about 60 + amps for as long as it takes to lift the batteries from 50% discharged to "float charge" and this means the belt is having to deliver a lot of energy to the alternator which puts a lot of load on just a single belt. Alignment etc is all fine.

Running the fridge at anchor overnight takes a fair drain on the house batteries despite me fitting a keel cooler and LEDs to reduce demand .

I have found a supplier for the Serpentine belt conversion and will update a cost for this upgrade once i get the cost advised

The Vetus waterlock is an almost direct replacement for the Volvo muffler, just a few cm shorter, so you have to pull the exhaust hose forward a bit.

Perhaps look at alternative ways of recharging batteries - the Sterling route is a bit old fashioned now partly because of the high loads it puts on the alternator and belt.

As others have said, changing the WL for a non-metallic type is the best bet. Vetus also gets my vote for compatibility and availability.

Regarding the alternator belt, some searching around might be best to build your own kit. A quick search found this rather expensive one in the US: Pulley kit

Many thanks for the replies, i did find a very similar kit in the US and i'm waiting on a quote from the UK agents. At $440 + shipping and taxes the upgrade will probably be shifted to the back burner as there are a few more pressing upgrades and repairs needed.

Other than fitting an ugly gantry to mount 300w + of solar i'm not sure what other options there are to recharge the house batteries as i don't want to carry an extra 2 KVA petrol Gen to run on the deck in the anchorages annoying the other boats nor to i want an noisy wind turbine. We usually use the charging up of the engine as an excuse to move somewhere else .

I had the same trouble with a belt as the previous owner had put a non toothed belt where there should have been a toothed one. Once I realised that, it was a cheap fix to do ! That was an old VP - MD something or other......

You should be able to get a 'toothed' vee belt (Cogged Raw Edge Belt) from any decent belt/suppler. I always used to use Fenner but not sure if they still exist. Google it, they will be cheaper than engine suppliers. Give them the belt part no and they should be able to get an equivalent CRE belt. Gates is a good brand.

I went into a big car spares shop with the one from the engine. They matched it and it solved the slippage and black bits all over the place !
£10 fix !

I’m not too sure about the alternator belt problems you’re having. We have a Volvo MD2040 with a sterling alternator charge controller that really pumps the amps into the batteries when they’re down. Our domestic bank is over 400 amp hours of battery so it’s capable of taking a healthy charge And putting a serious load on the alternator. We have the standard Volvo ribbed V belts and although there is a little bit of black powder dust over time, the wear is nothing near the wear that you’re describing. I’d be investigating other issues. I very rarely have to alter the belt tension on the alternator.
