Hello

Can anyone tell me who the manufacturer is and what their part number is for the Volvo MD2040 glow plugs?

I Googled my way to this forum and saw a suggestion of NGK 107R for the MD2030, would these be the same for the 2040?

Thanks

You probably found my post. In which I was quoting an even older post on the same forum!

So I can't help but I'd be interested to know for sure. The only way to be sure is to remove one which is a bit dodgy just to check.

I like to carry spares but not at VP prices. I'd also like to carry a spare relay. Anyone know where they are available? Are they a standard form factor?

Thanks Everyone.! You've all put me on the right track.

Indeed the NGK Y107R plugs are the same and they do work - I have just installed them.

I discovered that one can buy the NGK Y107R for $2.45 yes you read right... $2.45 from Amazon. I'm in Florida and the Volvo agent wants $36 plus tax.

And wait there's more!!.. - the original plugs were BERU 0 100 226 382 and are available on Ebay for around $6.

Given my recent experience with Volvo's predatory pricing, my next boat will not be Volvo powered. One indeed wonders whether they are at all concerned with maintaining a loyal user base.

So it does pay to do some research and shop around on-line.

Once again, many thanks.

Yanmar are just as bad, as indeed are companies like Ford. Someone once worked out that you could build a car from spares for about 5 times the cost of a new car.

the plot thickens!..more help needed.

I bunged in the Y107R's yesterday - started perfectly. We went out for a sail and came back all ok.

Today, it wont start - all 3 plugs have failed.

So obviously, the fault is now higher up the line.

I'm guessing that the relay stays on after the engine has started and this just burns the plugs out... would this be a correct guess?

Thanks.

You can easily check if the glow plugs are on all the time by putting a meter between the end of the plug (or if your engine is made the same way as my 2040 the metal strip that connects all the plugs together) and the engine block. Check that 12 volts appears when someone depresses the 'heat' switch, and then disappears immediately they let the switch go.

If the plugs are on all the time, then it could be for a variety of reasons: due to faulty relay, faulty switch or wiring etc.

FYI Those NGK Glow plugs Y107R are for a Quick glow system and require a controller.

FYI
Those NGK Glow plugs Y107R are for a Quick glow system and require a controller to pulse the glow plug to regulate the current and heat or they will blow up.

You need to order the plugs from www.Yachtboatparts.com they are NGK and just as cheap and wont blow up as they are self regulating type,
They seem to be the only place I could find with well priced cross referenced glow plugs, I ordered some as mine blew up after fitting the 3 new NGK Y107R 's and Mark at Yacht Boat Parts told me the problem I had with them was because I had ordered the incorrect type.

They operate from Deacons boatyard I ordered online but collected from the office as my boat is that end of the Hamble river...

Hope this helps anybody else who fits the wrong type of glow plug....

Humphrey.....
